Writing Examples

In this essay I analyzed the book “La Montaña Maldita” by Gertrudis Gómez de
Avellaneda and discussed how the themes of the story fit into the romanticism
movement in Latin America. This paper really pushed my comprehension skills and prompted me to demonstrate my understanding of the story and the literary devices used by the author. My writing in this essay is a reflection of my studies in Spanish literature. This course focused primarily on early and pre-modern writings from authors and civilizations in Latin America. The reading I did for this class expanded both my vocabulary and my understanding of Latin American culture prior to the 20th century.
Some important skills I utilized in this paper include reading, writing, and researching in Spanish, and incorporating aspects of Hispanic culture into the analysis of La MontañaMaldita

This essay is a brief summary of the history and culture of Argentina. There is much to be gained from learning about the different cultures that exist in each Spanish speaking countries. Not only does this research help to inform cultural humility, it also offers me an opportunity to practice writing and grammar in Spanish. This paper was written as a final for my cultures of South America course, and I was able to incorporate many aspects of the course into my analysis of Argentina. I learned how to approach cultures that are different from my own that allows me to appreciate such differences without diminishing their significance.

For this essay I compared family relationships and dynamics in the United States and Latin America. I employed various research methods including an interview with a person from and United States and a person from Costa Rica. I incorporated these interviews into my article research to best understand the differences between the two cultures. The findings showed the value the U.S. has for independence often keeps family members separate and encourages young people to pursue a future for themselves without consideration of their family; where Latin American families tend to live together longer and have more extended family members living in the same household. This paper allowed me to use my conversation and research skills in both English and Spanish and helped me to better understand how and why Latina families are different from U.S. families.

This essay was written as a special topic report for my Environmental health
class. During the course we learned how the environment can impact human health, and how the spaces and substances we interact with on a daily basis affect our ability to be a healthy person. I was able to explore a topic of my choosing and I decided to investigate women’s health. I had seen articles discussing the benefits and disadvantages of various menstrual products. I was able to perform a literature review to discuss the health risks associated with disposable pads and tampons. I am very impassioned about women’s health, especially concerning topics surrounding menstruation.

This essay compares the state of health in Costa Rica against the United States.
I analyzed specific factors that impact and individual’s health including lifestyle, diet, and mental health. This essay was originally written as an assignment for my Advanced Spanish class during my semester in Costa Rica. I gained skills in grammar and critical analysis of my writing in Spanish. I also employed vocabulary I gained through my Spanish courses at Clemson centered around language for health professionals. The format of this paper was not new, however it allowed me to practice researching and writing completely in Spanish.

I wrote this essay as a final for my medical anthropology class. We were tasked with exploring a health issue using an anthropologic lens. I chose to explore the instance of diabetes in the indigenous population in the United States. I learned a lot in the writing of this essay because it shifted my perspective on health experiences and
the factors that can influence and individual’s ability to be healthy. I think this paper helped me to keep an open mind when researching. I also had to learn the difference between anthropology research and biology or sociology research. This essay also gave me insight into the health disparities between various ethnicities, but particularly for indigenous people.
